Executive Summary

  • Walmart announced that it will acquire plus-size apparel brand and retailer Eloquii for an undisclosed amount. Walmart has recently acquired several other apparel brands, including Bonobos in June 2017.
  • The acquisition will strengthen Walmart’s leading position in the US apparel market. Coresight Research data find that Walmart ranks number one in the clothing and footwear market by both sales and number of shoppers (despite the encroaching threat from Amazon).
  • Like the Bonobos acquisition and the ModCloth acquisition before that, this move should extend Walmart’s reach among nontraditional shoppers—namely, younger consumers with higher disposable incomes than those of core Walmart shoppers.

The Coresight Research team attended the Dreamforce software conference and analyst day hosted by software firm Salesforce, which was held September 25–28 in San Francisco. Our takeaways from this event include:

  • Salesforce is focused on helping its users deliver seamless experiences through a 360-degree view of their customers.
  • By helping people to rethink the world and core nonbusiness elements such as citizenship and governments, Salesforce can eventually impact much more than just businesses.
  • The evolution of artificial intelligence (AI)comprises four waves and we are currently in the third wave in which digitalized real-world data contribute to AI’s development.
  • Tech platforms, especially social media firms, are in an “arms race” for consumers’ attention and in doing so are pitching supercomputers against the human brain. Campaigners for more humane technology are arguing against this trend.

The Coresight Research team attended the Salesforce Dreamforce conference, held September 25–28, and saw three startups vying for the $250,000 Dreampitch grand prize on September 26. These startups were:

  • Carserv, a digital platform on which auto-repair shop owners can digitalize their processes and use data to improve customer engagement while increasing revenue.
  • Radius8, which localizes retailers’ digital experiences based on information from their physical stores (for example, inventory information) and external metrics such as the weather or events. Radius8’s platform is designed to drive consumers who pre-shop online into stores.
  • Draiver, a self-learning logistics platform that moves vehicles by planning, executing, and instructing drivers. The company matches up the vehicles that firms need to move with drivers who can undertake those journeys in a gig-economy model layered with machine learning.

Executive Summary

The Coresight Research team attended the Retail Innovation Forum in Amsterdam on September 26 and 27. The event was organized by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). Here, we feature the main takeaways from the talks held over the two days of the conference.

  • Technology will play a key role in physical stores, where retailers will use computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI) to assist human employees in providing an enhanced shopping experience.
  • Digitalization has changed the way consumers shop. Because the physical store is now just one of the channels available to shoppers, it must become both functional and experiential, a place to get personal advice and try products firsthand.
  • Personalization is key to reaching today’s digital-first shoppers. The interaction between retailer and consumer needs to be based on the shopper’s preferences and it must be adapted to the environment—time and place—in which the shopper interaction occurs.

Executive Summary

UK retailers are set to see sustained sales growth this holiday season:

  • We estimate that UK retail sales will grow by 4.5% year over year this Christmas, taking total November and December sales to £81.8 billion. We expect grocery retailers and Internet pure plays to drive this growth and that store-based nonfood retailers will see relatively soft growth.
  • We estimate that 20.6% of all November and December retail sales will be made online, which would make 2018 the first year in which e-commerce would capture more than one-fifth of all UK holiday retail sales.
  • We expect nonfood e-commerce sales to reach a threshold, too, increasing to 30% of total holiday nonfood sales for the first time.
  • Despite a benign economic context, challenged midmarket brickand- mortar retailers are likely to see sustained difficulties on two fronts. First, rising labor costs and high business rates have coincided with sales moving online, in turn deleveraging the fixed costs associated with brick-and-mortar stores. Second, pricecompetitive rivals in the e-commerce and discount channels continue to steal share from legacy retailers, while limiting those legacy players’ ability to pass on higher costs to shoppers.
