Executive Summary

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have increased the accuracy of speech recognition programs to an almost-human level. Smart devices can now comprehend and follow even complicated instructions such as “tell a joke.” With AI-powered personal assistants, also called intelligent personal assistants (IPAs), consumers can purchase items by just speaking to their devices, without having to log in and check out each time they shop. For instance, Alexa can utilize Amazon’s marketplace and the massive Amazon Prime membership base to complete the transaction on smart devices.

  • In the US, the voice-shopping market is predicted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 211%, from $2 billion in 2018 to $40 billion by 2022, according to OC&C Strategy Consultants.
  • The global market for smart speakers is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 31%, from $4.5 billion in 2017 to $30 billion in 2024, according to Global Market Insights.
  • More than 50% of voice shopping is done through smartphones, based on a survey conducted by Voicebot and Voysis in 2018. As IPAs become more accessible, all smart phone users could be potential voice shoppers.
  • The absence of visuals alters the traditional browsing process to the disadvantage of both shopper and retailer, and the tech firms that control the voice channel therefore disrupt the traditional shopper-retailer relationship.

Executive Summary

On November 30, the Coresight Research team attended the second day of the Bengaluru Tech Summit, taking place November 29–December 1 in Bengaluru, India. Here are our key takeaways from the second day of the event:

  • There is tremendous scope for the use of blockchain technology across industries in India, but several challenges need to be overcome first.
  • India is a nascent entrant into the visual effects and animation industry, but Indian companies in the sector have potential to compete with well-established firms across the globe.
  • Building digitally inclusive communities in India is complex. Greater collaboration among public and private companies and greater integration of municipal agency data are good starts to building these communities.

Executive Summary

  • AmazonGo stores are small, cashierless, checkout-free convenience stores that primarily offer on-the-go food options in metropolitan areas.
  • Amazon may be able to take advantage of growing consumer preferences for fast on-the-go healthy food options, but will also have to contend with increasing rents and high startup costs for new stores.
  • The launch of AmazonGo stores coincided with the acquisition of Whole Foods, the withdrawal of its AmazonFresh pure-play operation from some US regions and the merging of its Prime Now and AmazonFresh operations. These moves appear to support our long-standing view that it is much more difficult to make pure-play Internet retailing work in the grocery category than in nonfood categories

Executive Summary

In this report, we examine five online shopping trends that we expect to be prominent in the US and the UK this holiday season.

  • In previous holiday periods, Amazon’s revenue growth has been supported by growth in the Prime program. This year, Amazon may lose that support, as growth in Prime membership rates has faltered over the past few months, according to survey data.
  • Many consumers use multiple shopping channels before making their final purchase decisions, and we expect this trend to strengthen during the holiday season.
  • E-commerce will account for more than the oft-cited “just 10%” of retail sales in the US. We estimate that the online channel will capture more than 20% of all US nonfood retail sales for the first time this holiday and more than 30% of all UK nonfood sales for the first time.
  • More consumers will use voice assistants at various stages of the purchase journey this holiday. However, voice commerce will remain challenging for both consumers and retailers, as shoppers cannot see products or browse easily when shopping via voice assistant and retailers’ opportunities to cross-sell products and build larger basket sizes (which yield more favorable economics) are highly limited with voice commerce.
  • Social media will boost sales traffic more than it has in the past this holiday season due to a combination of two factors: consumers are researching more before buying and the number of fashion influencers with large social media followings is growing.
