  • Walgreens Boots Alliance reported marginal revenue growth of 0.7% in 3Q19, to $34.6 billion, in line with the consensus estimate. Diluted EPS came in at $1.13, down 16.3% year over year and below the consensus estimate of $1.19.
  • Comps for the Retail Pharmacy USA business fell 1.1%, while Retail Pharmacy International comps decreased 6.8%.
  • For FY19, Walgreens maintained guidance for roughly flat EPS at constant currency.

  • Walmart’s Mexico business Walmex will let customers order groceries for delivery using messaging service WhatsApp. Customers send a shopping list to Walmart’s WhatsApp number and pay by card or cash on delivery.
  • French hypermarket chain Carrefour will sell 80% of its China business to retailer Suning.com. Carrefour will retain a 20% stake and two of the seven board seats.
  • German cash-and-carry retailer Metro has responded to a takeover offer of €5.8 billion ($6.6 billion) from EP Global Commerce (EPGC), an acquisition entity owned by Czech and Slovak investors, saying it significantly undervalues the company.

  • In the US, year-to-date announced closures have already exceeded the total we recorded for the full year 2018. Coresight Research estimates announced US store closures could reach 12,000 by the end of 2019.
  • So far this year, US retailers have announced 7,037 store closures and 2,992 store openings. This compares to 5,864 closures and 3,251 openings for the full year 2018.
  • Year to date, UK retailers have announced 325 store closures and 444 store openings.
  • Following Ascena Retail’s June 10 quarterly report which revised its store closure numbers, we updated the Coresight Research estimate for the company’s store closures, which lowered the previously announced total figure for 2019 announced store closures.

Alibaba’s Tmall Global, China’s largest business-to-consumer (B2C) cross-border online marketplace, launched its first English-language website on June 26. The website gives an opportunity for international brands and merchants looking to enter the China market through a more streamlined process.

  • Tmall Global saw significant growth in 2018, with the number of new flagship store openings doubling year over year. That rate is expected to accelerate even further this year.
  • The new website presents various Tmall Global solutions, including instructions on how to use Tmall Overseas Fulfillment (TOF), a new initiative that allows international brands to store merchandise in TOF warehouses on a consignment basis before entering China.
  • Tmall Global plans to unveil different versions of the website in other languages, including Korean, Japanese and Spanish.
  • Some of the US brands that have already tapped into Tmall Global’s solutions include: 100% Pure, Evereden, Emily’s Chocolates & Nuts and Dr. Bronner’s.

  • About 61% of people surveyed plan to attend a cookout or barbecue, while nearly 40% plan to attend fireworks displays. Only 14% of those surveyed said they would travel over the holiday.

In this report, we look at the senior population in the US, its spending power and spending habits.

  • The 65+ age group accounted for 16% of the US population in 2018, or over 50 million people, and is expected to grow by 40%, or 20 million, through 2030.
  • Spending by senior households amounted to $1.6 trillion in 2017, up 10% year over year.
  • Of the $1.6 trillion, $1.0 trillion was spent by households headed by those between the ages of 65 and 74, while the remaining $0.6 trillion was spent by households headed by those aged 75 and over.
  • Apparel is one category that US senior households underindex on severely: They account for just 16% of total consumer household spending on the category compared to their 24% share of US households.
