  • Experiential rewards could translate into a deeper relationship with customers, resulting in higher consumer engagement and satisfaction. More retailers are integrating loyalty programs with a mobile app in order to increase convenience for shoppers and thus boost engagement.
  • Paid membership into loyalty programs has become more accepted among consumers as a way to access elevated experiences and added value, increasing revenue potential for retailers.

On October 15, 2019, the Coresight Research team was at the Global Tech Advocates Summit in Shanghai. Set to be an annual occurrence, the summit aims to promote and encourage collaboration in the tech industry.

The inaugural event focused on the proliferation of automation technologies, as well as the importance of innovation and collaboration:

  • The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning capabilities are causing job losses as business activities are automated. However, panelists suggested that future workforces can adapt to this changing landscape through emerging opportunities in new roles with different skill requirements.
  • Alibaba, Baidu and Tencent are leveraging AI technology to transform traditional industries.
  • Beijing supports technology development, particularly in certain industries, so there are opportunities for British and other foreign tech companies to penetrate the market. However, success hinges on understanding China’s culture and working with local partners.
  • Technology and innovation have the potential to drive growth for companies globally, but collaboration will be key—even for large companies.

On October 16, 2019, the Coresight Research team attended a research-sharing session at the China Retail 2019 event in Shanghai. Over 300 executives from the retail industry in China participated in the session, which focused on the latest national trends and consumer shopping behaviors:

  • The development of night-time commerce is becoming a driving force for economic growth in China, with many cities having unveiled plans to stimulate night-time consumption.
  • There are significant differences in the shopping behaviors between varying consumer age groups, with those born “post 90s” changing the retail landscape.

Our US Monthly Retail Traffic and In-Store Metrics Report reviews year-over-year changes in selected store-based metrics, including sales, traffic and conversion rates.

Highlights from our August Retail Traffic report:

  • US store traffic declined 5.7% year over year in September. The conversion rate advanced 1.4 percentage points, average transaction value (ATV) declined 1.3% and the product return rate remained flat.
  • September traffic varied over the course of the four weeks: The first week (which included Labor Day) performed the best. September 23 figures were low for sales, shopper yield, ATV and transaction volume.
  • The northeast experienced the largest decline in traffic at 8.5%, and the south experienced the largest decrease in sales at 4.4%. The midwest had a marginal 0.3% increase in traffic but strong sales growth at 3.1%.

  • Weinswig categorized the 19 participating companies into four buckets of retail disruption: Data and Insights; Next-Generation Marketing; Improved Shopping Experiences; and Operations and Supply Chain.
  • The audience voted through the Groceryshop app and site for the top five companies.

Executive Summary

On October 15, 2019, Amazon announced via a blog post that it had finished migrating its internal consumer databases from Oracle database software to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

  • The teams migrated 75 petabytes (75 x 1015 bytes) of internal data stored in nearly 7,500 Oracle databases to multiple AWS database services.
  • Migrated brands include Alexa, Amazon Prime, Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Fresh, Kindle, Amazon Music, Audible, Shopbop, Twitch and Zappos.
  • Benefits to Amazon include cost reduction, performance improvements and lower administrative overhead.
  • The move also gives AWS more control over its own data, moves its services out of the hands of a competitor and also signals AWS’ increasing competition with Oracle in the database space.
