Our monthly US Retail Sales Report reviews the latest sector data published by the US Census Bureau.

Highlights from our July US Retail Sales Report:

  • Total US retail sales excluding gasoline and automobiles increased 5.6% year over year in July, strengthening from the 2.2% year-over-year rise in June.
  • Furniture and home-furnishing store sales rose 2.0% year over year in July, following June’s 2.9% decrease. The clothing sector saw sales slip 1.6% in July, following a 2.4% drop in June. Department store retailers posted a sales decline of 3.6%, following June’s 5.5% decline.
  • In July, nonstore retailers saw sales rise 19.3% year over year, following the 11.9% year-over-year rise in June. This sector may have been boosted by Amazon Prime Day, which fell in mid-July.
