On a comparable basis, Coresight Research has tracked a 54.4% year-over-year increase in announced holiday hiring plans compared to the 2020 holiday season—and a 24.4% increase over pre-pandemic 2019—by retailers and allied sectors such as logistics companies. Walmart makes up the bulk of the increase, with plans to hire 170,000 seasonal employees this year compared to the 20,000 hires in 2020. Department stores are also seeing an increase in announced seasonal job openings after cutting seasonal hires in 2020.
